Let's Try This Again
Art Monk deserves to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That much seems to be apparent to nearly everybody -- except those who annually elect the group of enshrinees. Much like future Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, Monk didn't talk much -- but was a heck of a player and beyond classy off-the-field.
It's somewhat fitting that Monk's best chance comes in the same year that Cal Ripken was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
And much like Ripken, the numbers speak for themselves: Monk is 11th all-time in receiving yards (12,721); sixth all-time with 940 receptions; and has the second-longest streak of consecutive games with a pass reception (183; Rice has the record of 274). Monk also was the first receiver to break the century mark for catches in one season (106), which he set in 1984. Harrison now holds the single-season record of 143.
And, oh yeh, both Harrison and Monk attended a certain school in Central New York.
All of these stats make him one of the best 10 receivers ever -- but he's not in the Hall of Fame. Hopefully the injustice ends this year.
