NBC Explores Age-Old Question
NBC's new "social experiment" kicked off last night with "Age of Love." The reality show supposedly explores whether age is just a number. More accurately, the show is somewhere between "The Bachelor" and "Average Joe" -- with some "Beauty and the Geek" in there just for kicks. In other words, it's a good filler for a mostly-quiet summer on television.
Last night's premiere focused a group of older women (38-48) that are being dubbed "The Cougars." Mark Philippoussis, the retired Australian tennis star who is the object of their affection, met the seven women -- Angela (40), Jayanna (38), Jennifer (48), Jodie (46), Kelli (40), Lynn (40), and Maria (42) -- without knowing there would be others who would battle for his heart.
After their meetings and short conversations, Philippoussis took a few of the "Cougars" repelling before being forced to send one home -- in this case, Jodie. Right after the elimination, host Mark Consuelos informed Philippoussis that there were other, younger women: Adelaide (26), Amanda (25), Lauren (27), Mary (24), Megan (21), and Tessa (23).
Next week, Philippoussis meets the younger women and then interacts for the first time with the entire group. And of course, tension forms between the older set and the younger group.
Overall, everything was pretty much what's expected for a reality dating show. It'll be interesting if it becomes more like "The Bachelor" or if they can actually find something new to convey.
If it's the latter, the show will be successful. If not, then it'll get old really fast.
