Caps-Lightning Live
Live from Verizon Center's press box, it's RRT reporting on tonight's Caps-Lightning game.
First Period
The game got off to a bit of a disjointed start, but Chris Clark scored his first goal of the season at 6:33 (on a nice assist from Alex Ovechkin). Tampa countered at 16:40 on a Jason Ward tally (from Brad Richards and Paul Ranger) to even the score. Another sparse but enthusiastic crowd is witnessing the action. Tampa outshot the Caps 10-7.
Tied, 1-1 after one.
Second Period
The Caps got off to a strong start on Dave Steckel's first career goal at 4:43 (AO and Viktor Kozlov) but Tampa countered just 13 seconds into a Caps power play. Ranger evened the score for Tampa at 7:27 from Richards and Ward. The game then went back into somewhat of a lull, with Tampa dictating the action. Steckel has joined the first line (Ovechkin and Kozlov) for most of the night -- with Clark spending most of his time with Matt Pettinger and Boyd Gordon.
As the period wound down, the Caps took control on a goal by Brooks Laich (at 17:41 from Pettinger and Shaone Morrisonn) and Clark's second (at 18:42 from Brian Pothier and Michael Nylander). It was a much-needed boost of momentum for the home team. Clark became the first Cap to notch a multi-goal game this season.
4-2 Caps after two.
Third Period
The Caps are 2-0 when leading after two periods and clearly were the agressor, outshooting Tampa 5-1 over the first 10 minutes. At 5:39, Vincent Lacavalier dropped gloves with Morrisonn for a brief scuffle. However, the Caps got a four-minute power player and, even though they didn't score with the extra man, they spent most of the time in Tampa's end of the ice. Alex Semin, who looks like he's back to full strength after a stay on injured reserve, hit the post halfway through the power play.
The crowd -- annouced at 10,226 -- has been boisterous all night. They booed upon a World Series score update and when some fans didn't comply during the infamous kiss cam.
Tampa cut the deficit in half at 14:06 on a goal by Martin St. Louis (from Vaclav Prospal and Mathieu Darche). The Lightning still only have three shots this period, but have increased their intensity.
With 3:15 left, Olie Kolzig made a great kick save to keep the Caps in front. From there, it was back and forth action. Clark had a few chances to get a hat trick, but couldn't connect.
And with 1:26 left, the Lightning pulled their goalie. A.O. iced it with an empty-net tally at 19:56.
Caps win, 5-3!
