Backstrom Watches as Kane Wins Calder Trophy
Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks captured the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. The Caps' Nicklas Backstrom and Kane's teammate, Jonathan Toews, were the other finalists.
Backstrom was trying to become the second Cap in three years to win the award (Alex Ovechkin captured it after his stellar 2005-06 rookie campaign) -- which would have made them the first team to do that since Calgary in 1988-90 (with Joe Nieuwendyk and Sergei Makarov).
Ovechkin remains the only member of the franchise to win the Calder Trophy.
Backstrom received 30 first-place votes to Kane's 71. Kane outscored Backstrom in votes by a 1,078-872 margin. Toews was third with 647.
