As Free Agency Turns

Amidst a lot of chaos and exorbitant contracts, the Caps stayed relatively quiet with just two AHL-likely signings yesterday. The team inked Graham Mink and Tyler Sloan, both members of the 2006 Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears (coached by current Caps bench boss Bruce Boudreau).

Meanwhile, the much-ballyhooed Marian Hossa signed a one-year, $7.4 million deal with the defending champion Detroit Red Wings. This deal is a bit of a head-scratcher because it's hard to fathom why a 29-year-old supposedly in his prime can only agree to a one-year deal with a team not named the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Clearly, Hossa didn't want to return to the Flock of Seagulls Penguins. But, according to TSN, he also received multi-year offers from Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver -- which seems to indicate that Hossa didn't want to return to Canada after starting his career with the Ottawa Senators. It also makes you wonder if there's something else going on or if Hossa just wanted a year to prove himself and then hope for better offers next summer.

Meanwhile, Mats Sundin continues to contemplate retirement, while uber-pest Sean Avery signed with the pesky Dallas Stars. Seems like a good fit.

Although a lot of money has been thrown around, this hasn't been the exciting first two days of free agency (at least locally) that was expected. The Caps still are fixing to sign Sergei Fedorov, Brooks Laich, Shaone Morrisonn, Eric Fehr and Boyd Gordon. Other than that, it should start to quiet down until next week's Development Camp.
